ALEXANDRIA, Va. — On Monday, nearly two years after the collapse of his private home mortgage lending company and its main banking partner, Lee Bentley Farkas, named as the main architect of a $1.9 billion scheme that allegedly brought both down, took his place at the defense table here.On the opening day of a projected three-week trial, Farkas, the former chairman of defunct Taylor, Bean and Whitaker Mortgage Corp., watched as a 12-person jury, plus two alternates, were seated. Both sides presented opening statements to a packed courtroom later in the day, with U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema presiding.
